Is Confidence Returning to the UK Hiring Market?
Last month, we explored why the right recruitment partner matters more than ever in a slower hiring market. At that point, many employers were cautious, hiring plans were on hold, budgets were tight, and decisions were delayed until market conditions felt more certain.
But over the past few weeks, a question has emerged: is confidence making a comeback?
From our conversations with leaders across engineering, manufacturing, tech, and supply chain, the tone is shifting. Businesses are starting to talk less about “if” they’ll hire and more about “when.” Projects that were paused are being revisited. Permanent and contract roles are quietly being scoped again.
What the Market Is Telling Us
Recent national labour market data* shows employer confidence in the economy has reached its highest point in over two years. Short- and medium-term hiring intentions are trending upward, both for permanent and temporary recruitment.
This mirrors what we’re seeing on the ground at Omega:
- Advanced Manufacturing: Recruitment into automation, process optimisation, and leadership roles is re-emerging.
- Tech & Software: Software engineers, data specialists, and cloud professionals are back in demand.
- Aerospace & Defence: Contract hiring is picking up in systems integration, design, and delivery.
- Engineering & Production: Permanent vacancies are steadily increasing, particularly in design, quality, and maintenance.
But Is This Confidence or Caution with a Smile?
While hiring intent is improving, not everyone is rushing to expand headcount. Some are using this moment to plan pipelines, refresh employer branding, or trial flexible hiring models before committing to major growth.
So, we’re asking the question:
- Is this the early stage of a genuine market recovery?
- Or are employers still in wait-and-see mode, testing the water before diving back in?
Why We’re Asking
At Omega, we’ve seen hiring markets turn quickly. When demand picks up, competition for skills spikes almost overnight, and those who have planned early secure the strongest talent.
Whether you believe confidence is fully back or still fragile, the smartest move is to be prepared:
- Build your candidate pipeline before competitors do.
- Map critical skills and availability in your market.
- Review your recruitment model to ensure it delivers value in 2025’s evolving conditions.
Over to You
We’d like to hear from you:
- How confident are you feeling about hiring in the next 6–12 months?
- Have you already started re-engaging with paused recruitment plans?
- Do you think this optimism will hold through 2026?
Share your thoughts or message our team to talk through your sector’s current trends.
